Time commitment for apprenticeships

Supporting your apprentice

What employers need to know

Taking on an apprentice is an investment in your team and your business. To ensure the apprenticeship is a success, employers must commit time and support alongside the training delivered by Impact Academy. Here’s what’s required from you as an employer at each stage of the apprenticeship:

Day-to-Day Support

  • Provide mentoring and supervision – apprentices need regular guidance from experienced colleagues to put their learning into practice.
  • Allow time for off-the-job training – apprentices must complete planned learning hours away from their usual job tasks. This is done during paid working hours and must be supported by you.
  • Encourage reflection and development – apprentices should be encouraged to think about what they’ve learned and how it applies to their role.

Documentation & Reviews

  • Sign documentation – employers are required to sign apprenticeship agreements, training plans, and regular progress records.
  • Attend learner reviews – typically every 8–12 weeks, you will meet with the apprentice and their tutor to review progress, set targets, and address any concerns. Your input is essential to ensure training links to workplace needs.
  • Provide feedback – your observations on how the apprentice is developing in their role help shape their training.

End Point Assessment (EPA)

At the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentice must undertake an End Point Assessment (EPA) conducted by an independent organisation. Employers play an important role in preparing for this stage:

  • Confirm readiness at the Gateway – you will need to agree that the apprentice has met all requirements (including English & maths if applicable, and completion of training).
  • Support evidence gathering – apprentices may need to draw on workplace projects or examples for their portfolio.
  • Allow time for assessment – apprentices may need time away from their regular duties to complete project work, presentations, or professional discussions with the assessor.
  • Be available for feedback – some EPAOs will request employer input or confirmation of workplace activities.

Why Employer Support Matters

An apprenticeship is a three-way partnership between the learner, the training provider, and the employer. The more actively you engage, the greater the return on investment:

  • Apprentices complete faster and with stronger results.
  • Skills development is more closely aligned to your business needs.
  • Retention rates improve when learners feel supported.

In summary: Expect to commit some time to mentoring, signing paperwork, attending reviews, and supporting your apprentice through End Point Assessment. The investment is modest compared to the long-term benefits – a skilled, loyal, and productive member of your workforce.

"I’m very grateful to have completed your JEM Apprenticeship. It gave me the chance to learn and grow in a supportive environment. The combination of classroom learning and real-world projects allowed me to apply what I learned immediately. The Heat loss lesson was my favourite, and I used most of these calculations in my energy project for end point, which saved my department £4000/month after we replaced the equipment."
